The residential development is situated on a sensitive site within the Apsley Crescent Conservation Area of Bradford. The scheme consists of 29 affordable houses designed to meet HCA scheme development standards. The scheme included six shared equity dwellings, pepperpotted around the site, and two wheelchair accessible homes.
The development was aimed at meeting the housing needs of the BME community. The majority of the dwellings were 4 and 5 bed units.
The 1.3Ha site presented a number of design challenges: the site was steeply sloping and included a filled former quarry and 50 mature trees. There was also restricted vehicular access and a public sewer crossing the site.
The development was built in a combination of natural and artificial stone with slate roofs. Sustainability was a key issue during the design process and all the houses have been designed to achieve a ‘very good’ eco-homes rating.
